Cato Ridge, as the club proclaims, is a surprising gem, hidden in the KwaZulu Natal countryside. It lies on the N3 (the national road which connects Durban and Pietermaritzburg), just outside the dusty little town of Cato Ridge. Despite the town itself seeming uninteresting, Cato Ridge Golf Club is a real find, surrounded by nature and frequented by friendly locals.
The golf course is an 18-hole course, built in 1969. It offers mostly flat fairways and a game which is suitable for beginners, providing them with a challenge which is not unattainable. Pros and beginners alike will enjoy the quality of the course and appreciate the maintenance and care put into it by the grounds staff. Players will also likely be charmed by the birdlife and abundance of small mammals which live on and visit the course.
Visitors are welcome at the Cato Ridge Golf Club any day of the week, even Mondays, and will be more than satisfied with the club’s facilities. These include a putting green, rental golf carts, rental clubs, and a pro-shop. Not strictly golf-related facilities offered by Cato Ridge are a decidedly friendly clubhouse and restaurant, a conference centre and a halfway house.
Cato Ridge’s location makes it quite attractive and also ensures that it’s a convenient, affordable place to stop in for a round of golf. Just north of Kloof and Hillcrest, it is situated at the gateway to KwaZulu Natal’s iconic midlands and offers very easy access to the Valley of 1000 Hills, one of the most popular tourist attractions outside of Durban.
If you find yourself in the Cato Ridge area and find yourself hankering after a round of golf, followed by a hearty meal, feel free to stop in.
