The Central
University of Technology, or CUT as it’s also known, was established in the early 1980’s as
‘Technikon Free State’. Its name-change
came about at the turn of the millennium when South Africa restructured its
tertiary education system. Today the institution offers exceptional training in practical, career focused subjects as well
as providing a well-balanced atmosphere for students which takes into account
the need for social, cultural and
sporting endeavours.
The CUT main campus is located in Bloemfontein in the Free State, while there are also satellite campuses in Welkom in the
goldfields area of the Free State, and Kimberley,
in the Northern Cape. The student body consists mostly of South Africans
while there is also a small percentage
of international students, who come mainly from member countries of the
Southern African Development Community (SADC). Cut offers both contact and distance learning.
The university employs over 800 staff in research and academic positions. They help to
bolster the institution’s 4 faculties,
namely the Faculty of Engineering,
Information & Communication Technology, which offers degrees in civil,
electrical and mechanical engineering among others; the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, which has degrees in
life sciences, health sciences and agriculture; the Faculty of Management Sciences, which boasts degrees in accounting,
hospitality management and tourism & event management for example; and the Faculty of Humanities, which
specialises in education and communication degrees.
The various sports, cultural and other
organisations to get involved in include a student
newspaper, various political groups,
the Students’ Representative Council,
a poetry club and a mountain club, among others.
