Clifton Beach is made up of 4 beaches, each with their own character and group of beach-goers. Seeing as all four beaches are just 10 minutes drive from Cape Town city centre, these beaches are very popular with locals and tourists alike. The beaches of Clifton are separated by giant boulders and these also act as protection from the strong Southeaster wind. Seeing as these shores are on the Atlantic Ocean, these beaches are not great for swimming but the soft white sand is perfect for sunbathing and a quick dip in the icy water will do just fine to cool you down.
The beaches are quite a walk from the car park so remember to pack light as you'll have to carry everything down a number of stairs and across lots of sand until you find the perfect spot.
Clifton is a great sundowners spot and many locals have enjoyed picnics whilst watching the sun set. Just a reminder that no alcohol is allowed on any beaches in Cape Town so make sure those sundowners are non alcoholic. Second Beach has become well known as a popular rendezvous spot for gay men but many groups of friends spend time on the beach as well.
