Dundee Hospital a the provincial public health care facility that is located in the town of Dundee in Northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Dundee is a centrally located town, 400 kilometres from Johannesburg, 325 kilometres from Durban and 225 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg. It is also only approximately half an hour’s drive away from the neighbouring towns of Ladysmith and Newcastle. Dundee is considered “the least rural of all rural settings.”

Before the official Dundee hospital was built, Betania Hospital, a small Swedish missionary hospital served the Dundee community. It was built in 1896 by Baroness Posse and was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Anglo Boer War’s Battle of Talana Hill. In 1989 the official Dundee Hospital reached its current incarnation (after years of development dating back to the 1930’s).

The hospital offers numerous facilities among them an x-ray unit, a maternity ward, a trauma unit and an orthopaedic unit. Ancillary services include medical laboratory services, speech therapy, audio therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. It also offers the recently introduced Telemedicine facilities, a scheme being implemented in health facilities across South Africa, which allows healthcare workers to provide medical support from a distance.
