The Durban Deep Golf Club is an established, well-appointed
institution which started out its life in 1957. It was initially built as a
means of entertaining the population who worked at the Durban Deep Gold Mine.
The fact that it is built on the premises of a gold mine may make it less
surprising that the golf course is located in Johannesburg and not in Durban as
the name might suggest.
The Durban Deep Golf Club is situated in Roodepoort on
Gauteng’s West Rand. It is located on a side road going off the R41 (also known
as Main Reef Road) and is thus easily accessible to those living or staying in
the Roodepoort area. While the course was once exclusively for the use of the
mine employees, it is now open to visitors of all skill levels, 7 days a week.
The course consists of 9 holes, with kikuyu grass fairways
and cynoden greens. It is a parklands course – vibrant green and lined with
trees and even the odd flower. The club is also home to a halfway house where
golfers can grab a quick bite to eat, a bar as well as en event venue which can
be hired out for parties or conferences. The clubhouse is also home to locker
rooms and a pro shop.
The shop sells a variety of golfing equipment at
competitive prices, while also hiring out equipment like clubs and golf carts.
You can arrange to hire a caddy there too, or organise a lesson with the
in-house pro. There are good practise facilities available for this purpose, or
if you just want to brush up without doing a full round.
