The East London International Airport is located in East London, just nine-kilometres west of the city centre.
The East London International Airport began humbly after Lieutenant Colonel Alistair Miller requested the assistance of the then town council to establish a municipal aerodrome in Woodbrook, a town just west of the city. During that time, weekend flights were available to the public depending on the weather, but weekday flights were more exclusive and could only be booked by special arrangement.
The airport has seen a couple of relocations in the last few decades, from Collandale in 1944 to its present day site in 1965. Upon gaining a permanent venue, the airport was named Ben Shoeman after the transport minister of the time. The name, however, changed in the 1990’s to the politically-neutral ‘East London International Airport.
The airport has undergone many reconstructions over the years to make the terminal building more customer-friendly. Today, it boasts an efficient airport management team, a host of restaurants and cafes, and two runways. These runways witness 20–30 flights daily while the terminal building sees the comings and goings of 346 000 passengers per year.
Travelers enjoy the airport for its diminutive size because, with less passenger traffic, the airport is easier to navigate around. Passengers can pick up their luggage from the conveyor belt while avoiding the crowds, and don’t have to wait in long queues to grab a cup of coffee or a quick sandwich.
