Edendale Hospital is a public hospital in the Edendale area, 9 kilometres outside of Pietermaritzburg. It is a regional and district level hospital funded and managed by the KwaZulu Natal Department of Health. As is the case with many of South Africa’s public hospitals, it mainly serves patients from low-income communities, as is indicated by the hospital’s motto: ‘Fighting diseases. Fighting poverty. Giving hope.’
The area in which the hospital is situated, that is, Edendale, developed from a mission station set up by a Reverend James Allison in 1855. Many years later, the settlement was finally deemed significant enough to warrant its own health care facility. Construction of the Edendale Hospital started in 1951 and the first patients were admitted in 1954. Initially it was built to accommodate 620 patients but as the surrounding population expanded new wings were built onto the hospital and today it is a multiple story building with a number of additional wings that can accommodate 900 patients.
Today the hospital provides care in all the major medical disciplines and is also recognised as a post-graduate teaching hospital in these disciplines. Some of the services provided to patients at the Edendale Hospital include internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and ICU.
Some ancillary services include rehabilitation such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and an Ant-Retroviral Clinic, which is notable for having one of the largest ARV rollout schemes in South Africa, providing on-going ARV treatment to well over 10 000 HIV positive people.
