The Elephant Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort, some 45km from Johannesburg, offers an elephant experience for life.

The Haartbeesport Elephant Sanctuary is one of three African Elephant Sanctuaries (the other two being the Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary and the Plettenberg Bay Elephant Sanctuary) across three provinces in Southern Africa which provide a safe haven and “halfway house” for African elephants. These sanctuaries provide fully guided interactive elephant educational programs covering elephant habits, dynamics, behavior and anatomy.

The elephants in the sanctuary have been domesticated through positive reinforcement animal management principles, and as a result, provide visitors with the unique opportunity to interact with them.Visitors are able to touch, feed and get to know these animals.

The elephant handlers and tour guide are well versed in elephant knowledge and put a lot of effort into understanding and caring for the animals. During the tour there are plenty of opportunities for guests to ask questions, as well as many opportunities for photographs.

The sanctuary is unique in that it offers the incredible opportunity to walk hand-in-trunk with the elephant and Elephant Back Riding. Bare-back Elephant Riding gives us humans the unique experience of being able feel first hand the power and bulk of an elephant in contrast with it's innate grace as it moves across the earth.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the environment from an elephant's perspective.

The Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary offers a daily elephant interaction program from 8am to 2pm.

Great place, it was our wedding anniversary, so we went rock climbing (Own gear) at the Nuclear Crag on Africaland property, next to Necsa and enjoyed some white water rafting in the afternoon on the Crocodile River with Paddle Power. They also own a cute little restaurant with delicious food where you get off out of the raft, the Rusty Feather. Loads of little shops and found a Wonderful Portuguese restaurant right on the water at the boat club, next to the zoo, which I'll highly recommend. CHEAP Honey, in the town, driving away from the tunnel, after the Portuguese restaurant. It's solidly worth the stop, it's run by a pharmacist and her hubby.

Hartbeespoort is a lovely place to visit to get away from home. There's lot to do and see. Also, they have a lot of restaurants and shops to visit. The best thing is that its not far to travel and you in the bush and away from the concrete jungle.

Yeyyy!! Haarties neh!! WOW!! Naturally beautiful and relaxing place. I stand by the coining that Haarties is indeed Gautengs' millionaire playground, however it still caters for everyone including us mere mortals lol:)
