Accommodation near Glenvista Country Club - 4
The Glenvista Country Club, nestled in the hills of southern Johannesburg, is an exciting yet unique golfing experience. With its varied geological features – cliff faces and water hazards, a round played here is a challenge for all golfers.
The Glenvista Country Club originally belonged to the Basson family, where the grounds were predominantly used for agricultural purposes. In the late 1960’s, it was sold to the Glen Anil Development Organisation, and it was decided that, due to the sheer size of the property, a prestigious golf venue would be constructed. Sid Brew, a golf-course architect and seasoned player, was commissioned to design the layout in 1967. The development of the course took six years to complete and was finally opened to the public in 1973. At the time, the club not only boasted an 18-hole course but came complete with two tennis courts and a swimming pool. Over the years, however, the estate has received a face-lift, with a tennis pavilion being built and 18 bent grass greens re-laid. A water recirculation system was added to the grounds in 2001, ensuring that the course received ample supplies of water year-round, and did not fall victim to the harsh, dry winter months.
The parkland's layout offers a difficult game to golfers of all handicaps, characterised by perennial streams and dams. While these water features are undoubtedly beautiful, they are major hazards in which players have to contend with. One notable challenge can be found at the 12th hole, where an elevated T is situated near a ravine and dense bush. Apart from the water features, golfers are surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation.
Golfers can recount their stories over beers at the club house. There is a main bar which is spacious enough to accommodate both members and visitors; while a second bar area is used exclusively for private functions.
