Hanover Golf Club is a small establishment on the outskirts of Hanover, a fittingly small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The club does not consist of much and there is no doubt that the golf course is its main attraction, for it is pretty much all that constitutes the club.
The tiny town of Hanover is named after Hanover in Germany. It is located at the junction where the N1 and N4 highways meet. The town’s principal claim to fame is that it is said to be the most centrally-located settlement in South Africa. It claims to be an equal distant from Upington, in the Northern Cape, Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, Durban, in KwaZulu Natal, Johannesburg in Gauteng and Cape Town in the Western Cape. It also lies at the base of an arc, made up by Colesburg, De Aar and Middleburg.
The town initially developed in 1854 as a trading post and layover stop for people travelling through the interior of South Africa. It is unknown when the Hanover Golf Club came about though.
The club consists of a 10-hole course as well as a putting green in order to get your eye in before a game. Officially the course is classified as a parklands golf course, generally named for the inland location and lush, tree-surrounded environs, but given Hanover’s arid location, the course is not quite as lush, green and leafy as your typical parklands course.
Instead it has a desolate appeal, which is attractive to those who appreciate ‘alone time’ and a bit of wide open space. The course is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays (visitors are welcome on both days) and often the only company you will have are the merino sheep which are farmed in the area.
