Accommodation near Hartbeespoort Aquarium - 6

Hartbeespoort is home to South Africa’s first freshwater aquarium. The aquarium was established over 45 years ago and functioned as a sanctuary for rescued indigenous and tropical fish species. Today, the marine park has further expanded and become a safe haven for many orphaned and unwanted animals. Furthermore, it aims to educate the public about the importance of conservation in South Africa.

Visitors to the aquarium can view a wide variety of freshwater fish – of all shapes and sizes - swimming around in the indoor tanks. In outdoor enclosures, Nile crocodiles bask in the sun around the dam, while the resident pelican dives underwater in search of fish.

While individuals can take self-guided tours around the aquarium, those who are wanting to learn more about the habits of various aquatic animals are advised to attend pelican, seal, penguin and crocodile shows. These demonstrations take place on weekends and public holidays while weekday shows are by special arrangement only.

The aquarium is complemented by a pet shop which specialises in the supply of indigenous fish for the control of algae in ponds and dams.

Hartbeespoort
Great place, it was our wedding anniversary, so we went rock climbing (Own gear) at the Nuclear Crag on Africaland property, next to Necsa and enjoyed some white water rafting in the afternoon on the Crocodile River with Paddle Power. They also own a cute little restaurant with delicious food where you get off out of the raft, the Rusty Feather. Loads of little shops and found a Wonderful Portuguese restaurant right on the water at the boat club, next to the zoo, which I'll highly recommend. CHEAP Honey, in the town, driving away from the tunnel, after the Portuguese restaurant. It's solidly worth the stop, it's run by a pharmacist and her hubby.

Hartbeespoort is a lovely place to visit to get away from home. There's lot to do and see. Also, they have a lot of restaurants and shops to visit. The best thing is that its not far to travel and you in the bush and away from the concrete jungle.
