Accommodation near Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park - 2

Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve is located in the heart of Zululand. Having been established in 1895, it is the oldest park on the African continent. The park was the hunting ground of old Zulu Kings, such as Dingiswayo and Shaka, who put into place the first conservation laws. These laws are still abided by today, with the reserve being the only park under formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal.

The reserve was also home to Operation Rhino from the early 1960’s – a wildlife foundation that caught the world’s attention for its dedication toward preserving and creating awareness over the poaching of white rhinos.

Gamer viewers flock to the reserve in hopes of spotting the African ‘Big Five’- called as such because they are recognised as the most dangerous wildlife to hunt and prey upon. For those of you who aren’t in the know; the big five consist of the buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and the endangered rhino. While you’re almost guaranteed to spot an elephant or a herd of elephant on your trip, seeing the rest of the big five are considered rare, lucky finds.

While spotting these majestic creatures is a highlight for many wildlife enthusiasts, there is a host of other game variety to look out for, with herds of zebras and impalas around every corner. Tired drivers can take a break and stretch their feet at the many hides located around the park. These hides, which overlook pans and waterholes, are a vantage point to view the game at close range. Guided walks occur during the early morning and afternoons, providing an unrivalled game viewing experience where walkers will be in close proximity to the animals.

Apart from game viewing, visitors to the park have the opportunity to see abundance in flora and fauna which can be seen throughout the 96 000 hectare parks. Bird lovers can flock to the sections of the park where a large variety of birdlife can be seen.
