The Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital is a flagship tertiary and quaternary hospital located in Cato Manor, Durban. It was named after Inkosi Albert John ‘Madlanduma’ Luthuli who was a political activist, and later, president of the African National Congress in the 1950’s.
It was the first large-scale public hospital built in post-Apartheid South Africa. The hospital has adopted a public-private partnership with Impilo Consortium. The affiliation has given the hospital the means to provide accessible, quality care with their state-of-the-art facilities, excellent medical practitioners, and at maximum capacity, the provision of 846 beds for in-patients.
The hospital functions off an electronic medical record system (EMR), meaning that the healthcare provider strives in their attempts to ‘go green’ through abiding by paperless principles.
The medical equipment, from the MRI machines to the surgical instruments, is top-of-the-range and is serviced regularly. Furthermore, the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital is home to the only dedicated burns unit in the region.
The hospital provides their staff with recreational services and facilities, which includes a health and fitness club, a prayer room, a cafeteria, and a salon. There is also an onsite residential area which houses 400 properties, providing security, leisure and comfort. There are badminton, squash, and tennis courts, as well as a swimming pool at the village to keep residents fit, healthy, and active.

Loved it. Old world charm, close to the beach but when you are in Berea it feels like a different country. We went for walks (felt very safe) visited the local coffee shops and restaurants. Loved our stay!
