Isipingo Beach is located 19 km’s south of Durban, situated in the seaside township of Isipingo.
The long stretches of white sand make Isipingo Beach a popular attraction for holiday-makers. Isipingo Beach is also popular with local fishermen, especially during the sardine run. The annual sardine run occurs between the months of May through to July, and sees countless numbers of Southern African pilchards spawn in the cold currents of the Agulhas, before making their way to the East Coast of South Africa. The migration brings flocks of visitors down to the beach to catch a glimpse of the action, not to mention opportunistic fishermen.
Isipingo Beach is close to the industrial town of Prospecton, which harbours one of South Africa’s largest vehicle assembly parts, Toyota. The plant provides employment opportunities to many residents of Isipingo and other neighbouring towns. Isipingo is well known in South African history, for it is the final resting place of Dick King – an English trader and colonist of Port Natal.
Isipingo is a predominantly Indian area. Visitors to the town will have the opportunity to experience the vibrancy and spirit of the Muslim mosques and Hindu temples which inhabit the area.
Visitors can travel further afield to visit the neighbouring suburbs of Amanzimtoti and Umlazi. Situated along the fringes of Isipingo beach is the old Durban International Airport which now stands vacant.
