The South African Museum and Planetarium are located together in Cape Town city Centre.
The South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens. The collections range from the ancient - fossils almost 700-million years old - to the modern such as insects and fish caught last week.
The South African Museum was founded in 1825 and moved to its current location in the Companys Garden in 1897. Over the years, there have been millions of visitors to the museum.
Permanent Exhibitions at the museum include, 'Darwin and the Cape', 'African Dinosaurs', 'Wonders of Nature', 'Whale Well' and 'Our Place in the Universe', 'Stone Bones of the Ancient', 'The Karoo', 'The Giant Squid: Architeuthis', 'The Boonstra Dioramas, ''Norfolk Island Pine' and the 'Marine Exhibits'.
The Iziko Planetarium is situated alongside the Iziko South African Museum and has been in operation in it's current form since October 1987.
The present Planetarium has a 15.2m dome suspended beneath an outer copper dome almost 20m in diameter. The auditorium has 142 seats arranged in a unidirectional mode and is surrounded by a projection gallery. The 32 star-field projectors show 8 900 stars down to magnitude 6,5, and is capable of projecting the same number of stars one would see outside on any dark night.
In addition the Planetarium is a fully equipped audio visual theatre and it's star machine is complemented by multiple computer controlled slide projectors, video projection, special effects and a powerful audio system to enhance the experience.
You can visit the museum to learn more about the science of astronomy, indigenous astronomy and indigenous star lore. Astronomy shows are offered to schools and the general public.
