O.R. Tambo International Airport is located in Kempton Park, a suburb in the north east of Johannesburg. It can be accessed by three main transport systems – by car, the R24 and R21 freeways take you to the airport. The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, whose station is at the top of the central terminal building, connects the airport to Sandton, a major tourist and business hub for the city. You can also access the airport via twice daily busses or via a more frequent private bus service.

O.R. Tambo is South Africa’s busiest airport, and one of the busiest airports in Africa and the Middle-East combined with a capacity for 28 million passengers a year. The terminal buildings are modern and congregate around the central terminal, which was constructed at great expense for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The terminal is divided into 3 levels - level 1 for arrivals, level 2 for retail and restaurant spaces and level 3 for departures.

O.R Tambo is the hub for South Africa’s national carrier, South African Airlines, which covers domestic and international routes. Other airlines using O.R. Tambo include Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International, Delta Airlines, Emirates, British Airways and just about all of South Africa’s domestic airlines. From Johannesburg you can get on a direct flight to all corners of the globe from Kenya to China to Turkey, Argentina and more.

The O.R. Tambo International Airport, named after the one-time president of the African National Congress, lies at an altitude of 1700 metres above sea level. The air is thin here and thus this airport has 2 of the longest runways in the world. This is because it takes longer for planes to reach take-off velocity in these conditions.

The airport has two parallel runways which run from north to south. During busy periods, incoming planes will generally land on the eastern runway while those taking off do so on the western runway.
