Karridene Beach is situated in the coastal village of Karridene, about half way between Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas. Known as a popular spot for fishing, fisherman flock to the beach from around the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal hoping to get a few bites of Shad and Garrick – two species of fish prevalent to the area.
Karridene has the longest stretch of beach in KwaZulu Natal, allowing for lengthy afternoon walks along the coastline. While its expansive size makes it a major attraction for holiday makers, its remarkable beauty and unspoilt terrain adds to its popularity.
Surrounding attractions include the famous Aliwal Shoal, a world-renowned reef providing divers with a myriad of marine life, giving you the chance to get up-close-and-personal with a variety of tropical fish species. Lucky divers will be able to spot troupes of Grey Nurse Sharks, The Aliwal Shoal is their breeding ground between the months of April-November. Explore the murky depths of the shore, Aliwal Shoal is home to the remains of two shipwrecks which fell victim to the choppy current of the reef. Non-divers can take a trip out on the high seas for deep-fishing trips - good catches upon local charter boats are a surety.
Get a big shop in by travelling further afield to The Pavilion Shopping Centre. Having formerly been dubbed the largest shopping centre in KwaZulu-Natal, it since been overtaken by Gateway: Theatre of Shopping. Pavilion, which boasts many boutique shops and exclusive shopping chains, is a hotspot for fashionable Durbanites.
