Accommodation near Kenilworth Racecourse - 10
The Kenilworth Racecourse is a horse-racing circuit in one of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. The racecourse, which is named after the suburb of Kenilworth, where it’s found, is owned by the Western Province Racing Club (previously named Gold Circle) and is unique by South African racecourse standards for two reasons.
Firstly, it is the only course in the country to have 3 distinct tracks. What’s known as the new track is 2800 metres long and is used mainly for summer races, while the old track is 2700 metres long and is utilised for winter races. There is also a 1200 metre straight track, which bisects the circular track at a diagonal angle and provides a bit of a challenge as it has two uphill sections. The racecourse is a left-handed track.
The second unique factor is that the centre of the course is a recognised conservation area, protecting the endemic Cape Flats Sand Fynbos. There are 310 species of flora all together, of which 34 are threatened and one is endemic. There is also a thriving little community of birds, reptiles and small mammals to look out for. The Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area is essentially a non-profit organisation and they offer various themed walks in the reserve to interested parties.
Kenilworth Racecourse is conveniently located 15 minutes from the CBD and 20 minutes from the airport and is close to major transport routes. These factors make it a popular conference venue also suitable for other occasions. Its capacity is 330 people and the view from the fully-equipped conference rooms looks out over the reserve and the city – particularly pretty and sparkly at night.
This racecourse hosts a number of big, regular races and events, including the Cape Town favourite J&B Met, a must do on any socialite’s calendar.
