The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is Africa’s first formally declared ‘trans-border conservation area’ that straddles the borders of Botswana and South Africa. For those who aren’t clued up on the term, transfrontier or border parks are protected areas that are found between two international boundaries.
The combined land of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is 38 000 km2, in which 28 400km2 lies in Botswana and the remaining 9600km2 lies in the southernmost part of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. The wide-open spaces and the absence of human development have led to a high concentration of animals roaming freely in the savannahs and grassy plains, making the park a prime spot for game viewing. During seasonal migration, herds of wildebeest, springbok, eland, red hartebeest and other large herbivores travel vast distances in search of food during the harsh winter months. In turn, they are stalked and hunted by numerous carnivores such as lions, cheetahs and the bat-eared fox.
Two of the parks more prominent species are the ground squirrel and the suricate (commonly referred to as the Meerkat). Both animals are burrowers, meaning they sleep underground at night, and during the day, move around in clans to protect themselves against numerous predators. Honey Badgers and the pangolin (anteaters) are also regularly spotted throughout the park.
Other resident game that visitors should be on the lookout for include brown and spotted hyenas and the park’s star attraction, the black-maned lion.
Holidaymakers who are looking to further explore the riches of the Kalahari should travel to Kuruman to visit the famous Wonderwerk Cave. These caves have recently been declared a National Heritage Site as they contain numberous rock paintings on the walls, testifying to the rituals and customs of local tribesmen who had once inhabited the region
