Accommodation near Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden - 57
Kirstenbosch, as the gardens are known
locally, is one of the jewels of Cape
Town, loved equally by tourists, visitors and locals. You will find them on
the eastern slopes of Table Mountain,
in the suburb of Newlands, a 15 minute
commute from the city centre. The gardens are the ideal spot for a picnic
and also boast numerous organised activities which change with the seasons.
The gardens were established in 1913 to promote, conserve and display full diversity of Southern Africa’s
substantial floral accoutrement. The botanical gardens are an excellent
place to catch a glimpse at some of the species which constitute the famous Cape Floral Kingdom, from small
succulents to proud Proteas and everything in between. Plants which naturally
occur in arid regions and thus cannot survive independently in Cape Town’s
Mediterranean climate are grown in the botanical conservatory. A wide range of rare and threatened plant species can be
seen at Kirstenbosch.
The
gardens, which are run by the South
African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), are one of 9 botanical
gardens run by the organisation. They also happen to be the first botanical
garden in the world which is devoted to a country’s
indigenous flora.
Kirstenbosch boasts a truly spectacular
setting, with manicured lawns and brimming flowerbeds sloping away from the
towering mountain. There is a network of
pathways which wind their way through the gardens and plenty of benches strategically positioned under
trees in the shade, or on the crests
of hills where the view of the gardens and the city will blow your mind, or
both!
Kirstenbosch is home to two restaurants and
the Galileo Open Air Cinema which
screens films on Wednesday evening during summer. On Sundays during summer the amphitheatre sees a variety of musical acts,
both big and small names performing for the picnicking crowds.
The gardens are open 7 days a week. From September to March from 08h00 to 19h00 and
from April to August from 08h00 to 18h00.
