Accommodation near Krantzkloof Nature Reserve - 4

Found inland of Durban is the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve – a 584-hectare park that is largely covered by dense forest and ample vegetation. Nature-lovers and jaded urbanites visit the reserve on weekends to relax and unwind in the tranquil setting, where they’re surrounded by majestic views of the park and surrounds, a wide variety of game and an abundance of flora and fauna.

The Krantzkloof Nature Reserve lies on a coastal escarpment in the KwaZulu-Natal province. It is neighboured by Pinetown, Hillcrest, and is a mere four-kilometre drive from the centre of Kloof. Having been first established in 1950 by the National Park Board, it now falls under the management of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Association.

The reserve is the meeting point of two river gorges - Molweni and Nkutu – so visits to the park are not only characterised by verdant greenery, but by flowing streams of water. Game-viewers on the prowl for animals will come across herds upon herds of wildlife, including zebra, bushbuck, duiker, vervet monkeys, various kinds of mongoose, genets and water monitors. If you’re looking to spot ‘The Big Five’ or larger predators, you won’t be able to view them in the park. However, twitchers will strike gold with the recorded 200 species of indigenous birds.

Common attractions in the park include the two well-maintained picnic sites. Here you’ll be able to enjoy a braai using the barbecue facilities or relax while taking in the spectacular views. There are also various trails with routes that lead up to the Kloof and Nukutu Falls or down into the river gorges. These walks cater to various difficulty levels and age groups. If you have young children, take a gentle meander along the Molweni River, before trudging through a cool, dense forest. The more seasoned of hikers can opt for the strenuous ‘Orange Trail’. This hike encircles the entire park and will take you approximately six hours to complete.
