Loeriesfontein is a little-known town in the Hantam region of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It straddles the world-renowned Namaqualand, an area which has grown famous for its spring flower display. Every year, between August and September, the usually arid region bursts into life with the blossoming of nearly 4000 species of desert flowers.

The town of Loeriesfontein is as tiny as they come, with a population hovering around the 3000 mark. Simply owing to the lack of people, the golf course has a very small following and the facilities are basic. They consist of a 9-hole parkland course and a putting green. In this instance, the term parkland is used loosely, because while the course is largely flat, the hot, dry climatic conditions are not really conducive to the growing of trees. However, in the spring time the Loeriesfontein golf course, like the rest of Namaqualand, is surrounded by desert flowers of all persuasions, and this alone makes it a course worth visiting.

The town and, naturally that includes the golf course too, is located in a geographical basin, encircled by hills and mountains. Once you have perfected your shots at all 9 of the holes, you can investigate some of the other quirky attractions in Loeriesfontein. These include a windmill museum, which houses a collection of roughly 24 windmills of varying sizes, and a ‘folk and culture’ museum, which houses over 1000 artefacts from the days of the ‘trek farmers’, including a trek wagon and an equipped tent.
