Accommodation near Mangosuthu University of Technology - 10
The Mangosuthu University of Technology came into being after former South African politician and Zulu tribal leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi saw an imminent need to establish a tertiary institution for disadvantaged youth in Durban and surrounding areas. The aims of the university were, and still are, to provide opportunities for scholars who wish to further their education. In 1979, the university opened its doors to the public with an enrolment of a mere 15 students. Over the years, the university has expanded exponentially and now boasts a populace of more than 10 000 students.
Mangosuthu University informally referred to by its acronym MUT, was formerly a technikon, but is now recognised as a university of technology that aligns itself with other related South African institutions. Since inception, the university has developed a reputation for being diverse in the programs that are offered to students. These programs focus on developing relevant, career-orientated skills by working closely with commerce and industry sectors. To date, there are a number of fully accredited qualifications available to students across the faculties of Engineering, Management and Natural Sciences.
When the university was newly established, a National Diploma in Engineering was offered by the Faculty of Engineering to prospective students. Thirty years on and vast improvements have been made to the content and quality of the diploma. Students who wish to follow a vocation in the field can now choose between a number of programmes, including chemical, surveying, construction management, quantity surveying, electrical engineering and more. Mangosuthu’s Management Sciences sector has been described as both diverse and dynamic. This faculty is home to a number of departments such as Accounting, Communications, Economics, Law, Marketing and Public Management. The university’s faculty of Natural Sciences has made waves with regards to developing their research capacity, having formed collaborative platforms with different departments within and outside of the discipline. Programs available to potential students include Agriculture, Chemistry, Biomedical Technology, Environmental Health and Nature Conservation.
While the aims of the institution are to ready graduates for the working world, the university also involves themselves in bettering the lives of disadvantaged communities in Umlazi and surrounds. This is done through implementing activities and programmes that focus on finding permanent solutions to the socio-economic issues faced by the local residents.
