Accommodation near Marakele National Park - 2

The Marakele National Park is a game reserve run by South African National Parks (SANParks) in the far north of South Africa. The reserve is located in Limpopo province with Polokwane being the closest urban hub. Marakele is a haven for a variety of bird species, less common antelope species and a healthy number of predators too. It forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere, which means that aside from the fauna, the scenery in the park will certainly give you something to write home about.

The reserve covers over 670 kilometres squared and in that area you will find a variety of vegetation types and their accompanying inhabitants. The diversity is partly due to the fact that the reserve lies in a transition zone, where the drier eastern landscape meets the moister western one. Among the plants you will encounter in the reserve are grasslands and grassy hills, yellowwood trees, cedar trees, occasional cycads and tree ferns. This vegetation is divided between hills, gorges and open plains.

There are over 250 species of birds found in the reserve, including what is possibly the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world. There are 800 breeding pairs. Marakele also has 16 antelope species, including tsessebe, eland and reedbuck. Four of the big 5, lion, leopard, elephant and rhino reign supreme while other predators like hyena also compete for food.

Marakele National Park has 80 kilometres of roads, most of which are suitable for saloon vehicles. One road in particular, which leads up to the top of the Waterberg Massif is a must as it provides the most breath taking views of the landscape below. From up there you will understand why the Tswana called it ‘Marakele’ in the first place, because it really is a ‘Place of Sanctuary’.
