Accommodation near Mbombela Stadium - 8
The Mbombela Stadium is in many respects,
the pride of Mpumalanga. It is situated in the province’s capital city of
Nelspruit. It gets its name from the city’s official, politically correct
title, Mbombela, and offers superior facilities. It is a relatively new stadium
built to be multi-purpose, and while the stadium’s design is interesting in its
own right, the stadium is close to many other Mpumalanga attractions too.
The Mbombela Stadium is one of a group of
stadiums constructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was hosted, to the
country’s great pride, in South Africa. It was designed with a distinctly
African flavour, especially since it is situated in the heart of the Lowveld,
South Africa’s Big 5 hotspot. The places where the design really comes into its
own is in the zebra-striped seating as well as the 18 orange giraffe-inspired
columns which hold the stadium’s roof up.
The multipurpose stadium mainly plays host
to rugby and soccer matches, but has also been known to host the odd benefit
concert and other large events such as religious gatherings. Pertinent to the
sporting activities carried out there, the pitch is a combination of natural
full rye and artificial stabiliser – Desso GrassMaster.
The stadium can accommodate 43 500 people
and has sufficient parking for 4500 vehicles. The seating includes a number of
private venues such as the restaurant and club lounge, which serve buffet style
meals and light snacks for 450 people respectively. Both double as conference
venues. There is also a 180-person auditorium and on the other end of the scale
completely, a braai park, where patrons can cook up a storm before a match.
Afterwards they can travel just 40 kilometres away to the impressive Kruger
National Park. Between these two sites one would’ve glimpsed some of
Mpumalanga’s best offerings.
