Accommodation near Melkbaai Beach

Melkbaai Beach (Melkbaai meaning milk bay) is the main stretch of beach on Strand’s 5-kilometre long beachfront. The town of Strand is situated roughly 50 kilometres from Cape Town along the N2 freeway. You’ll find it tucked between the towns of Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay.

Strand’s beachfront is impressive to say the least, and as a result exceedingly popular, but there is no doubt that the Melkbaai section takes the cake where popularity is concerned. This section of the beach is just as scenic as other parts, what with the gorgeous False Bay stretching out ahead of it and the majestic Hottentots Holland Mountains towering over it. Come holiday season though and Melkbaai has the best vibe by far, thanks to the holidaying families which pull in to spend lazy summer days there.

This section of the beach is also packed with amenities – just one of the reasons it is particularly popular. Just behind the sandy section of the beach lies an amusement area boasting super tubes and mini-golf, which provide a change of pace and a small break from the beach itself. Melkbaai is also home to a massive tidal pool which offers endless hours of fun to adults and children alike.

Strand, and indeed Melkbaai Beach is famous around South Africa for being one of the safest swimming beaches in the country, an obvious draw card during the Cape’s hot Mediterranean summers. After a swim, one can nip across to one of the restaurants or cafes which line this section of the beach to grab a milkshake, beer or glass of wine before heading home to rest up for another day at the beach.

Strand
Beautiful would just like to see police activity as there was an incident with very young people drinking and breaking the beer bottles in the street and throwing them at vehicles. When reprimanded by another lady they just laughed at her and carried on. Pips security also tried his best to reprimand them asked them to move away from area and clean up their mess which they just left lying around. Other than that we love Strand, clean and safe.

Strand
The Strand has a very nice, relaxed atmosphere and is an enjoyable place to holiday. We visited the area in March and it was still relatively quiet. At night we went to sleep with the sound of crashing waves and in the early evenings we sat eating ice cream on the beach front and watched the sea. The shopping malls are close enough so that you can go to the movies and visit the restaurants and the Strand is close enough to Stellenbosch if you want to spend an evening walking through the old town. I would really recommend it.
