The Meyerton Golf Course appears like an
oasis in the dry and yellow Gauteng Highveld. Named after the town in which its
found, and appropriately so, being the only golf club in said town, you’ll find
the course in the town of Meyerton, which is south of Johannesburg and roughly
15 kilometres north of Vereeniging. The town falls squarely within the Vaal
Triangle – a decidedly yellow grassland landscape, and the course proudly lays
claim to its reputation as the greenest course in the triangle.
The greens at the Meyerton Golf Course are
evidence of the high maintenance and fastidious care that goes into running the
course, and the club as a whole. It thus goes without saying that this is an
excellently-run club with great facilities.
The 18-hole course was designed by Jorrie
Jordaan and its construction was completed, ready for play in 1986, making the
course nearly 30 years old. Its setting is typical of the Highveld – that is,
flat swathes of grassland. However, on much of the course, the greens are lined
with trees so the full extent of this openness isn’t always obvious, especially
if you have your head in the game!
Apart from the course, the Meyerton Golf
Club boasts a clubhouse which fulfils all of a golfer’s off-course needs. For
starters, there is a well-stocked pro shop on site with a golfing pro on hand
to provide advice. You can also hire a caddie or rent a cart there. The halfway
house is a great place to grab a bite to eat in the middle of a game, while the
restaurant offers a slightly more formal dining experience and the bar is a nice place to grab post-golf drink.
For those keen to improve their game, there
is a putting green and a driving range too, and for business-minded individual,
or those wanting to host a party, there are banqueting and conference
facilities on site.
