Accommodation near Moses Mabhida Stadium - 2

The Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban was named after a general secretary of the South African Communist Party. It was built to accommodate the Durban matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was completed in November 2009, and saw its first match a few days later – a soccer match between the Amazulu and Maritzburg United teams.

Today the stadium’s distinct form stands proudly on the Durban skyline, a young but already iconic feature of this seaside city. The Moses Mabhida Stadium is built on the grounds of the Kings Park Stadium, and is still primarily used for soccer matches. It also attracts design fundi’s as the stadium has won numerous design awards for its slick rounded shape and iconic arch which holds it all together.

The stadium comprises 2 permanent tiers of seating, able to accommodate 54 000 people. Within that there are 150 corporate suites which can accommodate 7500 people. There is also a 3rd temporary tier of seating which brings the stadium’s total capacity to nearly 80 000 people.

Moses Mabhida Stadium serves as a venue for 3 main types of events: sport, concerts and tourism. In the sporting arena it has hosted a number of cricket matches and regularly hosts soccer matches, especially since it is currently the home of the Amazulu Premier Soccer League team. As for concerts it has hosted a variety of international music acts, religious celebrations and even the odd political rally. When it comes to tourism, it is the activities associated with the stadium’s structure which draw the crowds.

The giant arch which connects the north side of the stadium to the south is 105 metres high. At the north side of the stadium visitors can take the funicular up to the view point at the top of the arch and experience the breath-taking views of the Durban cityscape and the sea. In the daredevil stakes, the next level is to do the 550-step adventure walk which starts on the south side of the arch and takes you over the top. For the adrenaline addict, there is the most famous Moses Mabhida activity – the 220 metre swing, the largest of its kind in the world. It involves jumping off the 4th ladder rung on top of the arch and then swinging across an arc of 220 metres. If you survive the experience you can go buy a souvenir from the curio shop on the ground level.
