The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is yet another one of South Africa’s stadiums built in the lead up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is named after the administrative region in which it can be found, that is, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and not after the man himself, as is often thought. The stadium is located in the heart of Port Elizabeth, the capital of the Eastern Cape and is the first world-class soccer stadium the province has ever had.
Aesthetically, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is unique as its roof is designed to resemble flower petals, particularly notable at night when the lights from inside the stadium give it a definite flower appearance. This feature has earned it the nickname, the ‘Sunflower’. Its position overlooking the North End Lake is also unique and there is a spectacular view from the top of the stadium.
The stadium’s official capacity is 45 000. These seats are spread across the general seating areas, 23 private boxes, 150 VIP suites and 60 business suites. There are also numerous bars to accompany these suites.
Other stadium facilities include a sports clothing shop, a gym, 2 conference rooms with a capacity of 200 people, and lecture and function venues.
The nitty-gritty stadium details include the size – FIFA-approved 105 metres by 68 metres for soccer and 100 metres by 70 metres for rugby, and the playing surface, which consists of natural grass and artificial turf around the edges.
Today the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is primarily used for hosting rugby and soccer matches.
