Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is a South African, tertiary education institution with its main campus situated in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
Port Elizabeth is situated 260 km from Knysna and about 800km from Cape Town. The University is popular with international tourists due to its sunshine and safe sandy beaches.
The University was founded through a merger of three institutions in January 2005 – namely the University of Port Elizabeth, the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (dating from 1982), and the Port Elizabeth Technikon.
The University’s most unique aspect is that it has been declared a private nature reserve. The campus covers 830 ha, and is dominated by the St Francis Dune Thicket vegetation community, which is characterised by clumps of thicket occurring within a matrix of Dune Fynbos.
NMMU has approximately 27 000 students and 2 500 staff mebers, based on six campuses in the Nelson Mandela Metropole and George.
The University holds the acclaim of being the first ‘green’ school in South Africa and it offers the most affordable MBA in South Africa.
