Red Cross Children's Hospital, officially named Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, is regarded as the leading postgraduate training hospital in paediatric medical and surgical training. The Hospital has ties to the prestigious University of Cape Town's School of Child and Adolescent Health. It is also tied to the University of the Western Cape Dental School as well as to the University of Stellenbosch.

The hospital strives to be the leading health care provider for children in Africa. Children from all over South Africa are referred to Red Cross Children's hospital by smaller hospitals, clinics and referral hospitals. This is also true for children from all over Africa. The hospital is also the only one in the country that is dedicated solely to child health care. It offers a wide range of comprehensive specialised paediatric services and is a recognised centre for training in all child health care professions.

Red Cross is a pioneer in almost every field of child health care in South Africa, having achieved feats within the paediatric field that other hospitals had not dared to succeed at. In 1959, just three years after its opening, the hospital became the first to perform open heart surgery on a child. In 1964, it became the first to separate conjoined twins. 1968 saw it become the first to perform a renal transplant on a child while in 1997 it became the first hospital to do a double transplant on a child. The hospital also has the first and only paediatric neurosurgery department and has achieved many other firsts.
