Rennies Beach, as the name implies, is a beach in the south of Port Edward in the province of KwaZulu Natal. This section of the KwaZulu Natal coast lies south of Durban and is often referred to, unsurprisingly, as the South Coast. The specific stretch of coast where you’ll find Rennies Beach is called the Hibiscus Coast, and is an extremely popular holiday destination for local travellers.
The area experiences a subtropical climate which is typical of the KwaZulu Natal coast – with hot, humid weather in the summer months of November to March and slightly cooler temperatures in the winter. The Indian Ocean remains warm all year round, and it is these factors which make Rennies Beach such a popular place to park off for the holidays.
At the south end of the beach you will find the Mtamvuna River mouth, which adds a different dimension to the beach experience, with some fresh water to paddle in. The river also stands as a physical boundary between the provinces of KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape.
The coastline in front of Port Edward is essentially one long beach, and so walking along Rennies Beach you will cross over onto other beaches and walk past other parts of town without necessarily realising it.
Walking along the beach is an especially satisfying activity to partake in early in the morning when you’ll have the beach to yourself. It’s also great for swimming, reading, paddling in the rock pools and between May and mid-July, the sardine rush brings a flurry of sea birds, dolphins and other marine life.
