The Richard’s Bay Country Club is located in
Richard’s Bay, a town in the far north
of KwaZulu Natal. Close to the Mozambican and Swaziland borders, Richard’s
Bay is renowned for having one of the largest harbours in South Africa. This is
thanks to Lake Mzingazi, upon whose shores the Richard’s Bay Country Club is
situated.
The country club was established in 1970 with its construction funded by BHP Biliton
(then known as Alusaf). This was the start of a long tradition whereby the major industries in the area contribute to
the development of the town’s social infrastructure. Today The Richard’s
Bay Country Club is dedicated to fostering sportsmanship and good fellowship
and is committed to meeting the needs of
its members and those of the broader community through initiatives like the
Sports Development Trust.
The club’s focus on sport is enabled by the
wide array of facilities. There are tennis
courts, squash courts, a swimming pool and an 18-hole golf course. All
facilities are extremely well-maintained and a pleasure to use.
The golf course in particular has an
excellent reputation for being one of
the most simultaneously scenic and challenging courses in Zululand (the
region of KwaZulu Natal where Richard’s Bay is found). It
was designed by South African golfing
great Gary Player and received an update
in 2007 by Peter Matkovich.
For after sport socialising there is a very
pleasant restaurant and bar area,
and the club offers venue hire and
catering for conferences and private functions like weddings, birthdays and
anniversaries.
