Bloemfontein may not be known for its
golfing prowess but that’s not to say there aren’t a few good facilities in the
area. The Schoeman Park Golf Club is one of them, and in addition to a full
length course, there are a number of other sporting facilities there too.
The golf club is situated on the outskirts
of Bloemfontein, on the road that takes you to the airport. Out here, the main
city hum dulls into the background and you become aware of the Free State’s
semi-arid Highveld grassland landscape. Playing a round on the 18-hole course,
you come to appreciate the open landscape and air in your lungs.
The club was established back in 1904, when
a group of Scottish railway workers came together and started playing on a
9-hole course in the same location. Today, Schoeman Park is still owned by
Transnet but operates as a separate legal entity.
It boasts a range of golf related
facilities, from the pro-shop with its in-house pro, rental equipment (in the
form of carts and clubs) and golf lessons, to practise facilities like the
putting green and driving range. All this is available for members and visitors
alike, 7 days a week.
Bloemfontein, being situated in the Free State
as it is, experiences a semi-arid climate characterised by hot summer days
punctuated with afternoon thunderstorms and chilly winter days, on some of
which frost even forms. However, if the weather is too cold and/or rainy for a
round of golf, one can always slip into the halfway house for a bit to eat, or
better yet, the restaurant. There is also a bar and conference facilities.
