Sunninghill Hospital is named after the suburb in which it’s found. Sunninghill is an affluent business and residential suburb in the north of Johannesburg. Its neighbour, Sandton is far more glitzy and well-known though. The hospital is owned by the Netcare group, the largest private hospital network in South Africa, which also operates in the United Kingdom.
Sunninghill Hospital began as a non-descript community hospital but has grown over the years into a world class medical institution boasting a number of highly specialised units. Patients and their families can access these top-notch facilities easily via the N1 north or N1 west highways.
Netcare Sunninghill Hospital is renowned for its Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation, and indeed its cardiac unit is very highly respected, even hosting live cardiac workshops which are beamed to national and international congresses. The hospital is also noted for the Albertina Sisulu Sexual Assault Unit which provides HIV –testing and ARV’s to rape survivors. Many of its patients come from the townships of Alexandra, Diepsloot and Zevenfontein and a portion of the unit’s, as well as the hospital as a whole’s patient base, are treated on a pro bono basis as part of the Netcare group’s commitment to social responsibility and community upliftment.
The Sunninghill Hospital has a sleep lab, a brain lab and is home to the Netcare Renal Unit. It is lauded for its holistic approach to cardiac treatment, especially since the addition of stereotaxis (using imaging to find an anatomical location) to the electrophysiology lab.
The hospital’s services include an accident and emergency unit as well as a very modern maternity unit and other units such as neurology, psychiatry, orthopaedics and more.
