Tembisa Hospital is a government-run institution situated in Olifantsfontein in the Gauteng Province.
While offering a wide range of healthcare services, they specialise in the fields of HIV, AIDS and Tuberculosis-related treatments. Tembisa has received accreditation for their ongoing antiretroviral treatment programme – a drug that is used by HIV/AIDS patients. Other medical services that are provided include medical male circumcision and maternity services that includes 24-hour admissions post-delivery. Those suffering with mental health issues can receive assessments and referrals. Specialised cases are often referred to the tertiary health care institution, Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Persons who are admitted to the hospitals are treated by qualified doctors and nurses and are served daily, nutritional meals. Furthermore, outpatients are administered nutritional supplements used to quicken their recovery process, or to better their quality of life if they are facing lifelong ailments and disease. As the hospital is government-run, patients receive free medical services and treatments.
In 2014, the paediatric department of Tembisa Hospital collaborated with the University of Pretoria, the collaboration provides opportunities for medical students and registrars to receive ‘on-the-job’ training. This decision has proved fruitful as it has increased the capacity in the ward and provides a hands-on education to future doctors.
