The University of Cape Town (often abbreviated to UCT), is South Africa’s oldest university and holds an esteemed status as one of the continent’s best tertiary institutions. This is based on the high standard of public research which comes out of the university as well as the success rate of its students.
The university was founded in 1829 as the South African College and was initially a school for boys. In 1918 it was elevated to university status and underwent a name change, giving it the more fitting title, University of Cape Town. As is often the case with tertiary institutions, UCT students have often been very vocal about matters which count. During the apartheid years, UCT students regularly protested against the then government’s stance on racial segregation. At times the protests were so strong that the National Party sent in police to quell the students’ protestations.
These days the university is by and a large a calmer place, with one of the most picturesque settings of any university in the world. It is located on the Rhodes Estate on the slopes of Devil’s Peak. The university is divided into the Main Campus (itself divided into upper middle and lower campus, in Rondebosch/Mowbray), Hiddingh Campus (in Gardens) and the medical school (in Observatory). Upper Campus boasts the most spectacular view of the city.
UCT offers tutelage in a range of disciplines from health sciences, humanities, science, engineering and commerce. There are roughly 25 000 students studying at UCT and the university employs about 4500 staff members, including academics, administrative and support staff.
