Accommodation near The University of Pretoria - 10

The University of Pretoria has its origins in the Pretoria Centre of the Transvaal University College, which was established in 1908. Colloquially referred to as ‘Tuks’ or ‘Tukkies’ by present-day students, the nicknames were derived from the acronym ‘TUC’.

Located in the heart of Pretoria Central, in the north of the Gauteng Province, the institution initially opened its doors as an English-speaking university. It started off with a mere four professors, three lecturers and 32 enrolled students. Courses that were available were restricted to Dutch and other modern languages, English and Linguistics, Classics, and Natural Sciences. Things, however, began to change course after an act of parliament in 1930 gave rise to TUC becoming the internationally recognised University of Pretoria. This major development saw student numbers increasing to 900; making it the largest South African institution at the time.

Today, the university boasts a student body of over 50 000. With courses being taught in both English and Afrikaans, the populace is multi-cultural and diverse. The tertiary institution strives for academic excellence by offering a string of degree programs that are both internationally accredited and are structured to replicate that of world renowned universities. What makes the university unique in its approach to education is that it follows holistic principals. This is done by their involvement in community engagement activities and through their collaboration with other institutions, government, and various industries.

There is a comprehensive selection of courses that are offered – from undergraduate and postgraduate programs, to short courses in Information Technology, Human Health and several other fields. Faculties at the University of Pretoria include Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Agriculture, Law, and others.
