Accommodation near The University of Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch University is one of South Africa’s top 3 universities and is South Africa’s 3rd oldest tertiary institution. It was established in 1866 as the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, and like the University of Cape Town, underwent numerous name changes as it evolved into an official university. It was given university status, along with its current name, in 1918.
The university is located in the heart of the Cape Winelands, in the town of Stellenbosch – hence its name. This is an Afrikaans speaking region and the university’s official teaching medium is Afrikaans, however many of the lectures and course material are in fact in English. Owing to the bilingual nature of the university, it has an official Afrikaans name too, Universiteit Stellenbosch. As one of the few remaining Afrikaans universities in the Western Cape, it is considered an important institution by many in the broader Afrikaans community.
Stellenbosch University has 150 departments which are divided between 10 faculties. The main campus, which is in the heart of Stellenbosch, is home to 7 faculties, namely Arts & Social Sciences, Science, Education, Agrisciences, Law, Theology, Economic & Management Sciences and Engineering. The university has 3 other faculties located on various campuses. The Faculty of Military Science is at Saldanha Bay, the Faculty of Health Sciences is based at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow and the Faculty of Business Science is based at the campus just outside Bellville.
In addition to its standing within South Africa, Stellenbosch is often acknowledged as one of the top 300 universities in the world. One of its claims to fame is that its staff and students produced Africa’s first microsatellite, SUNSAT.
