The University of the Witwatersrand (often referred to simply as Wits) is a public university in Johannesburg. It is spread across multiple campuses in the Northern Suburbs and, like many of the institutions in Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general, the university has its roots in the mining industry.
It first came into existence in 1896 (making it the 3rd oldest university in South Africa, after UCT and Stellenbosch), incarnated as the South African School of Mines and was located in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape. Over the years it went through various name changes, accompanied each time by a change of focus, from school to technical college and finally, in 1922, university, when it was renamed the University of the Witwatersrand, a name which has finally stuck.
The university’s alumni include Nobel Laureates such as Nadine Gordimer and South Africa’s favourite human icon, Nelson Mandela. It’s current student population reaches nearly 28 000, with the majority engaged in undergraduate studies across the 5 faculties, which include the Faculties of Commerce, Law and Management, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities and Science, each of which acts as an umbrella for numerous fields.
Wits owns and manages numerous sites of cultural and scientific significance. Among them are the Cradle of Humankind at Sterkfontein, various museums, important rock art artefacts, the Wits Theatre, the Wits Art Museum and the Johannesburg Planetarium, which was the first of its kind in Africa.
The University of the Witwatersrand is among the top universities in Africa and is a respected public research institution.
