The Tshwane University of Technology is a triumph by South Africa’s post-Apartheid democratic standards. It is a tertiary educational institution which came into being in 2004. The large university exists because of an amalgamation of 3 institutions: Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North West and Technikon Pretoria. After the merger the university took on the internationally recognised denotation, ‘university of technology’ and dropped the old ‘technikon’ title.

These days the Tshwane University of Technology is amongst the largest universities in South Africa, with a student body nearing the 60 000 mark. Furthermore, 22% of them are housed in university residences!

To accommodate the students, and as a heads up to the old institutions, the university has 6 campuses in 4 of South Africa’s provinces. You’ll find satellite campuses in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng and North West.

The university has 8 faculties, namely Economics and Finance, Engineering and the Built Environment, Humanities, Information and Communication Technology, Management Sciences, Arts and Science. Degrees and diplomas offered include human resources, teaching, adventure tourism management and graphic design among many others!

The university’s approach to learning has a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship. This ties in with its focus on the economic and social development of the Southern African region.
