Accommodation near Umtamvuna Nature Reserve - 5
Umtamvuna Nature Reserve has been described as KwaZulu Natal’s botanical paradise, comprising of a unique riverine forest, rare endemic plant species and a spectacular array of birdlife.
The reserve includes a large section of the mighty Umtamvuna River and is also surrounded by cliffs and plateaus. Many of the imposing cliff faces stand at a height of 240-metres and are the chosen nesting grounds for the resident Cape vultures. The plateau consists of open grassland or more specifically, ‘Pondoland Sourveld’. These grasslands are known for their colourful displays of wild flowers; this occurrence however, is dependent on winter rainfall.
The reserve is located 8km’s from the rural town of Port Edward. The 324.7-hectare park is popular for walkers looking to explore it on foot. There are a number of trails to embark on, all varying in distance and difficulty. The ‘Fish Eagle Trail’ is a four-hour circular route which offers visitors scenic views while giving them the opportunity to explore diverse sections of the reserve.
The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is more suited to day visitors as there is no accommodation available within the park. However, if you wish to prolong your visit, there are various establishments found in nearby areas. In between game spotting, enjoy a meal at the reserve’s picnic site. Here you’ll be able to spot various birds and marvel over the views of the game reserve.
If you’re looking to explore Port Edward, there are a number of places that one can visit. The Crag’s View Wildcare Centre is the only formal rehabilitation centre in the entire South Coast region, offering care, treatment and nurturing to orphaned and injured birds and animals.
