the capital of the Free State province in South Africa. The hospital is
associated with the Netcare
healthcare group, the largest private
healthcare provider in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
The Universitas Hospital is unique for
being one of 2 hospitals in the Netcare
fold which are part of a public-private partnership. In this case, Netcare
works together with the Free State Health Department to provide healthcare to a
broad cross-section of people. The goals (and benefits) of such an approach to
healthcare provision are twofold. Firstly, if the plan is executed correctly it
leads to a more efficient use of
government resources, and secondly, the private sector is able to bring in money which the hospital would
not otherwise have.
As it stands, Universitas is a multidisciplinary hospital aiming to
provide world-class healthcare across a broad spectrum of specialities. These
range from surgical disciplines to general medicine and internal medicine.
At Universitas there are a number of specialised wards too, and
clinics like the diabetes clinic and
the nephrology unit, which has a
dialysis unit attached to it.
Just a sample of the extensive disciplines practised at the hospital include pathology,
pulmonology, ENT surgery, endocrinology, haematology, gastroenterology,
orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery,
neurosurgery and vascular surgery.

facilities for MRI and CT scans, completing the promise of
well-equipped hospital staffed with passionate, caring professionals and

Bloemfontein feels like it's inbetween a town and a city... big enough to have all the amenities, but small enough that locals will help you out when you get lost. I couldn't find my destination (due to construction) and a local helped me out with directions not once but twice!
