Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens is situated in Roodepoort, 30 kms north from Johannesburg city centre.
Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens has been a popular outing for locals and holiday makers since the early 1800’s. It is the second youngest of nine national gardens, having been formally established in1982. Initially called the ‘Transvaal National Botanical Gardens’, the grounds were cordoned off from the public and could only be visited by special arrangement. It was officially recognised as a public space in 1987 and has been used for a myriad of recreational activities ever since. It received another name change in 2004 to ‘Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens’ after the late ANC comrade, who along with former South African Nelson Mandela led the struggle for a democratised South Africa.
There is ample vegetation in the area, consisting of a myriad of savannah and grassland, and is home to over 160 indigenous plant species. Due to the vast and diverse vegetation, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is considered one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.
The area around Witpoortjie Falls, a colossal water feature standing at the epicentre of the gardens, is used as a picnic area and is an ideal spot to bask in the sun during summertime. It has been assumed that the falls were given its name due to its close proximity to the old Witpoortjie Station - travelers en route to Johannesburg would take a pit stop here, and made their way to the falls for a dip and a bit of relaxation.
Over the years, the garden has undergone several changes and received add-ons to enhance the value of one’s visit to the grounds. While having humble beginnings, visitors to the park can now enjoy the gardens many features, including the Succulent Rockery Garden, the Wild Flower Area, Arboretum, but to name a few.
The Eagles Fare Restaurant is a popular meet-up spot for locals and serves as a wonderful rest point in between exploring the expansive gardens. Breakfast, lunches or high-tea can be enjoyed on the terrace under the shade of a massive Stinkwood Tree.
