Accommodation near West Coast National Park
The 40 000-hectare West Coast National Park was established in 1985 with the aim to conserve the Langebaan Lagoon and surrounding areas. The lagoon, being the focal point of the reserve, is famous amongst birding circles and has, in recent times, been declared a Ramsar site. The Ramsar title recognises these areas as globally significant because of their endemic wetland birds. Twitchers who visit West Coast National Park will view numerous wader species – long-legged birds such as storks and herons. These birds return home during the summer following their winter migrations elsewhere.
Apart from the wetland varietals, the West Coast National Park is a sanctuary for various other species, including flamingos, ostriches, the African oystercatcher and the endangered Cape gannet. Camouflage hides are found throughout the reserve for visitors looking to immerse themselves in nature and view birds at close range.
Tourists who find themselves at the park in August and September are encouraged to visit the Posberg section – an area that is only opened to the public during these months. Here you’ll see the blooming of the Cape spring flowers, with the veldt transformed into an enchanted wonderland of colour and vibrancy. Two common varietals to look out for include the suurvy and white rain daisy. If you’re lucky, you might even spot herds of Posberg antelope roaming in amongst the flower field – certainly an idyllic sight if there ever was one.
Holidaymakers who are looking for outdoor activities to take part in can make their way to the Gelbek Visitor’s Centre for advice on where to go and what to do. The centre is found at the southern end of the lagoon and offers visitors tidbits about the region along with the historical events of the region’s first inhabitants, the Khoisan.

Langebaan
Exquisite view, Olifantskop to the East, sunset over Mykonos, beautiful.Far away enough from frantic never-ending activities, close enough for solitude, peace and quiet. A memorable breakaway. The real deal to be far enough from fast paced lifestyle, close enough to what required, peace and quiet breakaway to recoup and revitalise before the hustle and bustle of a new year starts. Exquisite views.
