Winklespruit
Beach is located in the small holiday
town of Winklespruit, on the South
Coast of KwaZulu Natal. The town is located between Illovo and Warner
Beach. It is about a half an hour from
the city of Durban.
The origins
of the town’s name are hotly debated with some saying that it was because of a
shop called Winkle (shop in
Afrikaans). The shop was set up to sell the goods that were aboard a ship
that wrecked on the coast of Winklespruit. Others say that it was because of
the commonly-occurring periwinkle snail
in the area.
Winklespruit
Beach, the main beach for the town of Winklespruit, stretches on for miles, lined with beautiful vegetated dunes and characterised by inviting waves
and golden sand. It is popular for swimming due to its warm Indian Ocean
waters and the fact that it is protected by shark nets.
The beach
has lifeguards on duty at all times
during the school holidays. The beach's excellent
surfing conditions make it a favourite amongst surfers of the area. It is also
great for surf angling. Winklespruit
Beach has an elevated rocky surface that serves as a point break dotted with
fishing rods waiting for a great catch.
The lagoon makes an ideal spot for boating, canoeing, and swimming. There
is a tidal pool which is great fun,
as well as a large park a short way from
the beach front. The park provides ample space for children to run and play
and is also perfect picnics. A few minutes away from the beach is the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary, also
wonderful for educational entertainment for children and even more so for bird
lovers.
