Amanzimtoti is one of the smaller satellite towns which make up the greater Durban metropole region. It lies to the south of Durban’s city centre and offers visitors the relaxation of a tranquil beach town with the convenience of a city, complete with shopping malls, bars, clubs and hotels.
Being so close to Durban, Amanzimtoti shares its warm subtropical climate, with mild winter temperatures, warm summers, high humidity and the warm Indian Ocean temperatures – swimmable year round thanks to the warm Mozambique current.
As you might expect, the activities in this area are largely beach and sea related. Amanzimtoti has a host of gorgeous beaches, many of which are complete with braai spots and varying facilities from fresh water swimming pools to trampolines and super tubes. Overall Amanzimtoti is a great family destination.
If you fancy a bit of adventure, the ocean offers plenty of opportunities. For keen fishermen (and women) you can take a boat out for some deep-sea angling, or alternatively for some boat-based whale or dolphin watching. If that doesn’t satisfy, you can try surfing the breaks or scuba diving.
Amanzimtoti offers easy access to not one but two famous dive spots, the Nebo – a sunken steamer - and Aliwal Shoal, a coral reef just off the coast which attracts all kinds of attention during the annual sardine run. Owing to the huge numbers of sardines passing through many predators are attracted to the area which in turn attracts divers.
If you are more at home on land, check out one of the numerous nature reserves - such as the Ilanda Wilds Nature Reserve - which offer walking, hiking and the opportunity to view wildlife such as the cape clawless otter, blue duiker and vervet monkeys.
