Blaauwberg is a picturesque seaside suburb of Cape Town. It is a short 20 minute drive from Cape Town’s city centre, and all the exciting attractions it has to offer.
Blaauwberg itself is popular in its own right, offering visitors lots of space, beautiful views, a great stretch of beach on your doorstep and a bit more peace and quiet than you’d get in the centre of the city.
Blaauwberg is a relatively new suburb when compared to other parts of Cape Town. It has wide streets, large properties and modern buildings – giving it a completely different character to the older parts of the city. There is no denying that its draw card is the beach.
Blaauwberg beach is a long stretch of white sand and also the place where you are likely to get one of the best views of Table Mountain. Standing on the beach, looking out across Big Bay, you will see the bay dotted with all manner of shipping vessels as well as a breath-taking view which reveals the mountain’s table shape in all its glory.
Blaauwberg is popular amongst those who want a breather from full-on city life as well as folks with a love of the ocean and ocean-sports. The beach is popular with surfers, who congregate near the old shipwreck just off shore, as well as kite-surfers who find the wind conditions favourable. These two sports are also great for spectators strolling along the beach. At the north end of the beach there is also a smattering of rock pools which can be entertaining to explore – especially if there are littlies in your party.
For the history enthusiasts; the Battle of Blaauwberg took place nearby in 1806. This was a decisive battle where the British defeated the Dutch and took over occupation of the Cape Colony.
Blaauwberg offers some gorgeous self-catering, B'nBs and guesthouses to visitors to the area. Stay in Blaauwberg to experience a different side to Cape Town.
