Calitzdorp Unterkünfte - 2
Calitzdorp is a quaint little town on the ever popular, if a little alternative, Route 62. The route is a beautiful but lesser-travelled road taking you eastwards through the Klein (Little) Karoo, passing myriad small towns and rural villages along the way. Calitzdorp is definitely a highlight along the route.
The town is nestled in the western part of the Klein Karoo, a vast, semi-arid region which stretches out before you as far as the eye can see. At night, the strong sunshine and blue skies give way to more stars than are possible to count. In short, Calitzdorp’s setting is beautiful, made even more so by the fact it is surrounded by mountains, with the Swartberg to the north, the Rooiberg to the south and the Huisrivier Pass to the west.
As a result of its positioning and the surrounding landscape, Calitzdorp is known for experiencing a broad range of weather variations. Summer days are piping hot, often reaching 40°C, while winters are chilly with snow resting on the surrounding mountain peaks. Calitzdorp has seen both flooding and droughts in its history.
On the subject of history, Calitzdorp’s ‘seed’ was planted back in 1821 when brothers JJ and MC Calitz were given land. Later they donated part of it for the building of a church and school to serve the local farming community. Over the years it grew and the church was completely rebuilt. The place developed into a town and today the old sandstone church, is still standing. It is a recognised national monument.
There is plenty to do in Calitzdorp, from birding, fishing and hiking to attempting the 4x4 trails in the mountains and sampling the area’s famous port wines (although not simultaneously, hopefully). Perhaps the best part is that at the end of a day of exploring you can come back to the pretty little town and indulge in a meal at one of the many restaurants and falling into bed in a quaint guesthouse or B&B.
