Centurion Central Verblyf - 2

Centurion is a small city located at the intersection between the N1 and N14 highways. It lies to the north east of Johannesburg, between Midrand and Pretoria. In previous lives the area has been known as both Lyttelton and Verwoerdburg, after the prime minister of South Africa, Doctor Hendrik Verwoerd, who died in the year leading up to the first name change. In 1995, a year after the country’s first post-Apartheid democratic elections, the settlement was once again renamed to the politically neutral Centurion, a name which has stuck.

Until recently Centurion was an independent city, but in 2000 it was incorporated into the City of Tshwane (Pretoria) Municipality. These days it is accepted as part of the greater Pretoria metropolitan area.

The area is something of a military hub, home to not one but 2 air force bases, namely the Waterkloof Air Force Base and the Swartkop Air Force Base. The latter is home to the South African Air Force Memorial. It is also home to the South African Air Force Museum.

Other points of interest in Centurion include the Centurion Mall and the Centurion Aerospace Village. The mall is the second largest shopping centre in Pretoria, built around Centurion Lake on the Hennops River, while the aerospace is a supplier village modelled on places like Silicone Valley in the United States.

The small suburb known as Irene is also an attraction. The area is reminiscent of a bygone era and is home to the Irene Concentration Camp Cemetery (where Boer woman and children were held during the Anglo-Boer War). There is a market held one weekend a month in the gardens of Jan Smuts House which is worth a visit.
